How long will a battery power my home during an outage?

A typical 13.5 kWh battery (like Tesla Powerwall) can power essential loads (refrigerator, lights, internet, some outlets) for 12-24 hours. Actual runtime depends on your energy usage. With solar panels, the battery recharges during the day, providing indefinite backup power.

Can I add battery storage to existing solar?

Yes! We can retrofit battery storage to most existing solar installations. This is a great way to add backup power and energy independence to your current system.

Do I need solar panels to have battery storage?

No, but batteries are most cost-effective when paired with solar. Without solar, the battery charges from the grid, which provides backup power during outages but doesn't reduce your electric bills significantly.

What's the difference between battery brands?

Tesla Powerwall offers seamless smart home integration and app control. Enphase IQ Battery uses safer LFP chemistry and comes with a 25-year warranty. Generac PWRcell is American-made and offers higher capacity options. We'll help you choose based on your needs and budget.

Are there rebates for battery storage?

Yes! Federal tax credits cover 30% of battery storage costs when installed with solar. Some utility companies also offer additional incentives for battery systems that can provide grid services.

How long do batteries last?

Quality home batteries typically last 10-15 years. Most come with 10-year warranties guaranteeing at least 70% capacity retention. Battery technology continues to improve, extending lifespans.

Can I go completely off-grid with batteries?

While possible, it's rarely cost-effective in Massachusetts where grid power is reliable. Most customers use batteries for backup power and energy shifting, remaining grid-connected but independent during outages.

How much does battery storage cost?

A single battery unit typically costs $10,000-$15,000 installed. With the 30% federal tax credit, net cost is $7,000-$10,500. Additional batteries can be added for more capacity.

What can I power during an outage?

Most systems are configured to power essential circuits: refrigerator, some lights, internet/WiFi, garage door, and select outlets. We can customize which circuits are backed up based on your priorities and battery capacity.

How does the battery know when there's an outage?

Batteries have automatic transfer switches that detect grid outages within milliseconds and seamlessly switch to battery power. You'll barely notice the transition—lights might flicker briefly.

Can batteries help me save money even without outages?

Yes! In areas with time-of-use rates, batteries can store cheap off-peak energy and discharge during expensive peak hours. Some utilities also pay for grid services (peak shaving) that batteries can provide.

Modern home batteries are very safe with multiple protection systems. LFP chemistry (like Enphase) is particularly stable. All systems we install are UL-certified and installed to code with proper ventilation and fire protection.

How is battery capacity measured?

Capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A 13.5 kWh battery can deliver 13.5 kWh of energy. Usable capacity is slightly less due to depth-of-discharge limits that protect battery life.

Can I monitor my battery performance?

Yes! All modern batteries include smartphone apps showing real-time power flow, charge level, energy consumption, and historical data. You can see exactly how your system performs.

What maintenance do batteries require?

Batteries are essentially maintenance-free. Software updates happen automatically. We recommend annual inspections as part of overall system maintenance, but there are no user-serviceable parts.
