What Is the Mass Save Program?

Mass Save® is a statewide energy efficiency program designed to help Massachusetts homeowners and businesses lower their energy usage and reduce costs. Through rebates, incentives, financing options, training, and educational resources, the program makes energy upgrades more affordable and accessible.

Mass Save is sponsored by Massachusetts' participating utility companies and energy efficiency providers, including:

Berkshire Gas
Cape Light Compact
Eversource
Liberty
National Grid
Unitil

The program's goal is to reduce overall energy demand across the state, ease strain on the electric grid, lower carbon emissions, and help residents save money through smarter energy use.

Who Is Eligible for Mass Save Incentives?

To qualify for residential rebates and incentives, you must:

  • ✓Be a customer of one of the participating utility companies listed above
  • ✓Live in a one- to four-unit residential property

Important:

Before receiving rebates or incentives, you must complete a no-cost home energy assessment through a Mass Save® approved contractor. NEEECO is a proud Mass Save® partner and can guide you through the entire process.

What Is a No-Cost Home Energy Assessment?

A Mass Save home energy assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of your home's energy performance. During the assessment, a specialist reviews:

Insulation levels

Appliances and energy usage

The goal is to identify exactly where your home is losing energy and provide clear, customized recommendations for improvement.

The assessment is completely free and is required in order to access most rebates and incentives. What Happens During a Home Energy Assessment?

Here's what you can expect during the visit:

Why Insulation So Important

Insulation is one of the most important factors in keeping your home comfortable throughout the year. It helps retain heat during the winter and keeps cool air inside during the summer, allowing your heating and cooling systems to operate more efficiently and with less strain.

Upgrading insulation is one of the most affordable and impactful ways to improve your home's energy performance.

Through Mass Save, eligible homeowners may qualify for 75% to 100% coverage on insulation upgrades. Improvements can be made throughout the entire home — from the basement to the attic — helping seal the building envelope and maximize comfort, efficiency, and long-term savings.

Home Energy Assessment Process
1

In-Home Walkthrough

An energy specialist will walk through your home, inspecting all living areas with a focus on insulation, heating systems, cooling equipment, and overall energy performance.

2

Air Leakage Testing

Testing is performed to identify drafts and hidden air leaks throughout the home. Pinpointing these problem areas helps create a strategy to reduce energy waste and lower heating and cooling costs.

3

Insulation Evaluation

The specialist examines the condition and depth of your existing insulation to determine whether upgrades are needed. This may include using thermal imaging technology or, in some cases, drilling a small access point to inspect inside walls with a fiber-optic camera.

4

Heating & Cooling System Review

Your furnace, boiler, air conditioner, or heat pump is evaluated to assess efficiency, performance, and potential replacement opportunities if improvements are recommended.

5

Health & Safety Testing

Carbon monoxide levels are tested to ensure your home is safe. Recommendations may also be made regarding smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors if needed.

6

Appliance & Electronics Assessment

Major appliances and electronics are reviewed to determine their energy usage. If applicable, energy-efficient upgrade options may be suggested to help reduce operating costs.

7

Instant Energy-Saving Upgrades

In many cases, the specialist will install simple energy-saving products during the visit at no cost. These may include advanced power strips and water-saving devices.

8

Personalized Energy Report

At the conclusion of the assessment, you'll receive a detailed report outlining findings, recommended improvements, and information about the rebates and incentives available to you.
